Does it sound too good to be true?  It probably is!

To clarify, the above listing is NOT real and is an example of a possible scam posting you may encounter online.  People have actually called our office to ask to see this unit and asking for the address.

Please be cautious on your housing search.  Housing scams in Berkeley are becoming a problem.

We are seeing most of these scams on Craigslist or on Facebook Marketplace or housing groups.  Vague posts on FB asking you to “Inbox me” or “screenshot this post via DM” are red flags.

The scammer won’t be able to show you the unit for whatever reason and will need you to use Zelle or Venmo to send them the deposit funds to reserve the unit because everyone else wants it too.

Scammers may also ask you to pay a small $50 – $250 fee just to see the unit.  Viewing a unit should not cost you anything in Berkeley.  Most property managers / owners will conduct public open houses or private showings for FREE.

The scammers promise a “guarantee” that if you don’t like the unit they will refund your full security deposit during the first week of moving in.
